Rapidly declining battery prices are transforming the largest energy storage sectors in our world today. To accelerate this transformation, it is necessary to transform batteries from black boxes to managed assets. Bii’s vision is that the combination of in-depth battery knowledge of performance and degradation with a deep understanding of stationary storage application requirements will be the foundation of next generation battery management.

Company Mission

Bii’s mission is to become the leading provider of battery management solutions across energy storage applications.

The Team

Battery Informatics, Inc. (Bii) was founded in November 2015 with the mission of developing the next generation of battery management for Li-ion batteries based on technologies developed at University of Washington. The company is funded by DOE, University of Washington, early commercial customers, and "sweat equity" from the co-founders. The company is at an early stage looking for exceptional talent plus customers who are looking for a competitive advantage with an advanced approach to battery management.

Bjorn Frogner, Ph.D.  –  CEO

Bjorn has over 40 years of experience in the intersection of IT and energy markets. He has a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley. He has broad experience as an engineer, manager, executive, entrepreneur and professor. He is a co-founder of Bii which is his 5th startup. His relevant technical expertise in Bii is the pioneering modeling and control work he did in the electric power industry in the mid-70s to mid-80s. His subsequent work mostly focused on managing software products related to AI, expert systems, and TCP/IP networks for the electric power industry. During the last 10 years, he has focused on helping start CleanTech companies.

Matt Murbach  –  Chief Technology Officer

Matt is a PhD student working for Prof Dan Schwartz in the ChemE department on battery diagnostics. He is responsible for development of the battery health diagnostics methods to be commercialized by Bii. This is strongly related to his PhD research at UW.

Jim Omlid  –  VP, Business Development

Jim has over 30 years of experience in business development, career technical education, and as a US Navy pilot.  He is an expert in building bridges between technologies and business needs.  Jim has developed many successful marketing and sales initiatives in database and application software products for corporate markets in manufacturing, electric power utilities, and solar energy. He has built several successful sales and technology teams. Based on his experience, Jim published Top Ten Myths of Selling, a book on team selling, designed to help technology professionals be more effective in the sales environment.

Al Mundy, Ph.D.  –  Director, Product Development

Al has 30+ years of experience with electronics, embedded systems, electric vehicle research, Li-ion chemistry, BMS, and a variety of technologies of importance to the Air Force. He earned his PhD from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs with a dissertation title of "Reduced Order, Physics Based Model of Electrochemical Double Layer Capacitors." He retired from the United States Air Force after 25 years of active duty.  Some of his assignments were with Rome Research Laboratories, the National Security Agency, and he completed his military career an Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the United States Air Force Academy.
